The NSF-funded project Osmore Mobilty and Infectious Disease (OMID) in the School of Human Evolution and Social Change (SHESC) at Arizona State University is recruiting one Postdoctoral Research Scholar under the supervision of Dr. Kelly J. Knudson, Director of the Archaeological Chemistry Laboratory. The postdoctoral research scholar will conduct heavy and light isotopic analysis of archaeological material from the Moquegua Valley of Peru in order to better understand the relationship between mobility and the spread of tuberculosis in the past. These duties include all aspects of sample preparation in the Archaeological Chemistry Laboratory at Arizona State University, as well as analysis using facilities and instrumentation in the METAL facility in the School of Earth and Space Exploration at ASU as well as returning samples to the appropriate repositories in Peru. The postdoctoral research scholar will also be involved in outreach and science education activities in the United States and Peru.

This is an in-person, full-time, fiscal-year, term-limited 1-year position, which may be renewable for a second year, contingent on funding and satisfactory performance. Applicants must be within five years of receipt of their Ph.D. to be considered. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2024.

Minimum Qualifications • Ph.D. in anthropology or related fields by the time of appointment • Demonstrated commitment to working with faculty, staff, students and communities to advance the principles of the ASU Charter

Desired Qualifications • Experience in bioarchaeology, archaeology, and archaeological science • Laboratory experience in biogeochemical analyses of archaeological materials, including heavy and light isotope analysis • Field experience in Andean archaeology and bioarchaeology, including exporting archaeological samples from Andean countries for analysis in the United States and returning samples to the appropriate Andean repositories • Demonstrated supervisory experience with student workers • Evidence of excellent organizational and project management skills • Experience working independently and collaboratively in a team • Demonstrated experience with public outreach and science education
