The Department of Anthropology at Purdue University seeks a scholar with expertise and use of artificial intelligence in biological anthropology to join our collegial, dynamic, integrative department. This tenure-track Assistant Professor position begins in August 2024. The ideal applicant will have a record of publication and funding, an active research agenda, analytic lab/field, quantitative/mixed methods skills, teaching and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students. We expect that the successful candidate will collaborate with colleagues in Liberal Arts and other areas to contribute to developing research clusters and externally funded research in Artificial Intelligence with existing degree programs and classes in foundations, tools, ethics, law, policy, and social implications of AI.

Candidates with expertise in innovative data science and AI approaches (e.g., big data, GIS, and machine learning) are invited to apply. We encourage applications from scholars using above approaches related to topics such as evolution, biological variation, health and disease, genomics, environmental change over time, and spatial/landscape analyses. We seek candidates who will collaborate across disciplinary lines, engaged scholarship, collegial relations, and the ability to incorporate students into active learning, research, and field or lab work. The successful candidate will participate fully in the life of a vibrant department whose Anthropologies of Tomorrow (AOT) initiative embraces publicly engaged and interdisciplinary/transdisciplinary scholarship that includes community partnerships and preparation of students for diverse and impactful careers. Preference will be given to candidates who can contribute expertise to the Advanced Methods at Purdue program through research that utilizes cutting- edge social science research methods and tools, and show an interest and ability in linking to related research and education programs on campus and beyond.

Purdue’s Department of Anthropology is located within the College of Liberal Arts and offers B.A., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees.

Position Responsibilities The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in AI approaches and related specialty areas. Two courses per semester will be split between departmental courses and foundational first-year courses in Cornerstone, Purdue’s integrated Liberal Arts certificate program (see College description). The candidate is expected to complement and strengthen Anthropology’s curriculum, and collaborate with colleagues in research, teaching, and service.

Basic qualifications A PhD degree (or equivalent international degree) in Anthropology or a related field must be held by start date of the position.

The College and University: For the third consecutive year, the College of Liberal Arts at Purdue University is embarking on multiple hires with a focus on artificial intelligence (AI) to begin in Fall 2024. Representing a variety of disciplines in the College, this cohort of scholars will expand our capacity to explore the implications of developing AI across our academic domains and advance and contribute to research and educational initiatives surrounding AI in new and important ways. These positions will also include teaching in our innovative, nationally-recognized Cornerstone Integrated Liberal Arts Program that educates students across the university.
