We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to work in the Ape Evolutionary Morphology and Movement Lab (Ape-Move Lab, PI: Dr. Zewdi Tsegai) in the Department of Organismal Biology and Anatomy at the University of Chicago. The Ape-Move Lab uses analysis of skeletal morphology, in combination with biomechanical studies, to explore the functional morphology of the human and ape skeleton and reconstruct locomotor and tool use behavior of our fossil relatives. The Department of Organismal Biology and Anatomy is home to a diverse group of internationally recognized investigators with expertise in vertebrate paleontology, evolution and development, behavioral neurobiology, comparative biomechanics, and integrative neuromechanics.

The project will explore functional morphology of the foot and ankle of great apes and humans to improve reconstructions of locomotor evolution in the human lineage. The project will utilize X-ROMM and CT based analytical approaches using both live subjects and cadaveric specimens. This research will be conducted in collaboration with Prof. Callum Ross and other members of the Ross and Tsegai Labs. The researcher will have access to imaging and dissection facilities required for the project, including high-speed biplanar digital videofluoroscopy, micro-CT and state-of-the-art computational equipment.

Experience: - PhD in a relevant subject area, including biomechanics, biological anthropology or anatomy - A documented research record, as reflected in publications in international journals, is highly advantageous - Extensive experience in anatomy and dissection, not necessarily in humans or non-human primates - Prior experience with X-ROMM and micro-CT based analytical methods is advantageous, but not required - Demonstrated experience developing innovative research projects - A strong ability to work in a collaborative environment

Responsibilities: - Conduct research on the functional morphology and biomechanics of the ape and human foot and ankle - Apply novel X-ROMM and CT based analytical approaches using both live subjects and cadaveric specimens - Analyze and interpret results of analysis of skeletal morphology and movement - Publish research in peer-reviewed academic journals and present results at academic conferences - Travel, both national and international, may be required for data collection

This is a fixed-term, full-time position available for two years in the first instance, to start in (or shortly after) October 2023. There is possibility for extension, subject to project status and funding.
