Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume): Master’s Degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in biology, anthropology, ecology & evolution, public health, or related field. Three or more years of experience in research data management. Outstanding organizational and communication skills. Experience working in an international environment with global colleagues from different countries. Experience in writing scripts and processing data using a statistical programs and tools (e.g., SAS, SPSS, R, Stata, Python), MS office. Experience in documenting code, scripts, and metadata. Strong background in research methods, data management, data collection, working with large, complex data sets. History of work in research setting with biological, ecological, physiological, and/or behavioral data. Proficiency in English.

Preferred Qualifications: PhD (or foreign equivalent) in biology, biology, anthropology, ecology & evolution, public health, or related field. Training in research data management. Experience collecting biological, ecological, physiological, and/or behavioral data. Experience using cloud data sharing platforms such as Box. Experience working with multiple data types/formats (e.g., audio, video, excel).

Brief Description of Duties: Stony Brook University in New York and the Centre ValBio (CVB) in Madagascar are developing a data crucible (warehouse) to hold all curated data collected at CVB. These data include primate and other animal data, environmental data, plant data, and data on people in this environment collected as part of ongoing research. The goal of this crucible is to create a central location where data can be made accessible and usable to be shared with future researchers while conserving and protecting sensitive data. The data manager will ensure that all data are included, perform quality control measures on the data, perform data harmonization, and develop standardized codebooks / meta data for these datasets. In addition, this individual will contribute to improvement and development of templates for existing protocols to ensure data harmonization. The data manager will be appointed in the Department of Anthropology and work closely with the CVB director, a data scientist, and the Research and Innovation Group at Stony Brook to achieve these goals. This position is located at Stony Brook with periodic travel to Madagascar.

Duties: Coordinate day to day data management operations, communication, and interaction of data management aspects of this multi-country project. Oversee and engage in all data entry, processing and management activities related to accurate development of the data crucible. Work with global collaborators to ensure data acquisition and harmonization. Review of data sets for completeness and accuracy. Use data management software to track data acquisition, processing, and harmonization in preparation for data sharing. Maintain a data log of all data based upon their level of data sharing (e.g., private, with approvals, public). Update existing and develop metadata for existing data as needed. Generate, implement, provide and update written documentation for procedures to organize, manage and store all materials related to the data crucible development. Participate in testing, operation, and maintenance of the data crucible. When appropriate send out data queries for ambiguous or missing data and perform edits on data using the query results. Develop tools to track the status of all data to be included in the data crucible and provide status reports. Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission. Special Notes: This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
