Dear colleagues and fellow students of humankind; past, present, and future, It is our sad duty to inform you that Professor Phillip Vallentine Tobias, FRS, one of the last doyens of Palaeoanthropology, former Chair of the Department of Anatomy and later Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand, passed away peacefully a little after noon.

Professor Tobias had been ill for some time and was admitted to the Donald Gordon Hospital earlier in the week. He fell into a deep sleep in the early hours of the morning and slipped peacefully away at midday. Professor Phillip V. Tobias was an outstanding tutor, mentor, academic, and humanitarian, a steadfast opponent of the discriminatory policies of the former Apartheid regime in South Africa. Professor Tobias will be sorely missed by all of those whom knew him, however briefly, and to the great many whom were inspired by his professional publications and public lectures.
