Leiden University Assistant Professor in Osteoarchaeology/Biological Anthropology

The successful candidate will join the science-based bioarchaeology group. The successful candidate will be responsible for undergraduate and graduate level courses in Osteoarchaeology, Advanced Human Osteology, Paleopathology, Laboratory Methods in Human Osteology, and leading MSc Thesis Tutorial classes involving instruction in scientific writing, data presentation, statistical methods, and professional skills. The successful candidate will contribute to the supervision of theses within the BA and MSc programs. The candidate is also required to participate in administrative responsibilities, commensurate with experience and level of appointment. The department is seeking candidates that demonstrate excellence in teaching and research and whose interests intersect both the natural and social sciences in understanding past human societies. More specifically, we seek candidates with the following:
PhD in (Physical) Anthropology or Archaeology;
Experience in teaching and research in osteoarchaeology;
Demonstrated commitment to the development of research in one of the sub-fields of bioarchaeology, such as human osteology, paleopathology, paleonutrition, paleodemography, dental anthropology, or quantitative methods;
Excellent command of English; fluency in Dutch is desirable.
The appointment is according to the terms of the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities (CAO Nederlandse Universiteiten) for the duration of one year. The function is validated in the University Function Ordening system under the profile Universitair docent. The salary, depending on education and work experience, is between the gross minimum of € 3.227,- and gross maximum of € 4.418,- per month, based on full-time employment (salary scale: 11). Leiden University also offers an annual holiday premium of 8% and an end-of-year premium of 8.3%. The position is available as of September 01 2013.
