<p><br />EURIAS Fellowships are mainly offered in the fields of the humanities and social sciences but may also be granted to scholars in life and exact sciences, provided that their proposed research project does not require laboratory facilities and that it interfaces with humanities and social sciences. The diversity of the 16 participating IAS offers a wide range of possible research contexts in Europe for worldwide scholars. Applicants may select up to three IAS outside their country of nationality or residence as possible host institutions.<br /><br />The Programme welcomes applications worldwide from promising young scholars as well as from leading senior researchers. The EURIAS selection process has proven to be highly competitive. <p><br />The successful applicant will contribute to a field-based research program employing photogrammetry methods to investigate relationships between the physical ontogeny and life history of living mountain gorillas monitored by the Karisoke Research Center in Rwanda, and will also take advantage of a recently-established collection of well documented mountain gorilla skeletal remains in Rwanda to generate new research.&nbsp;<br /><br />The project will require spending the majority of the year based at the Karisoke Research Center in Rwanda, and will involve close collaboration with the CASHP-based Project Director and with researchers, field assistants and other staff of Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International’s Karisoke Research Center, Rwanda Development Board’s Department of Tourism and Conservation (national parks authority), and the Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project. Activities will include field observational studies and behavioral data collection from wild gorillas, digital photogrammetry to measure physical traits of wild gorillas, collection of skeletal data, statistical analysis of results, and writing research articles. There may also be opportunities to contribute to ongoing laboratory-based research on the hard tissue biology of mountain gorillas, and field efforts based at other long-term primate study sites, depending on interests. &nbsp;<br /><br />The position is currently supported for a period of two years. Desired start date is July-August, 2013. <p>The project involves research on the variation of human genome in populations from various climate zones. It will combine evidence from Humanities and Natural Sciences to build realistic models of population dispersals over the past 100 thousand years and using high-throughput genotyping and second generation sequencing methods will attempt to reveal regions in the genome that have been affected by natural selection due to environment and life style differences.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Applicants should have, or must be expecting to complete, a Ph.D. in Population Genetics, Bioinformatics or related field before they take up this position. A good knowledge of models, methods, and theory in human population genetics and working experience with genomic data bases is required. In addition, programming skills, experience with computer simulations and familiarity with analysis tools designed for genome-wide genotype and second generation sequencing data will be an advantage.&nbsp;</p>
