The William S. Pollitzer Prize

This prize was created in honor of William Sprott Pollitzer (1923-2002). Dr. Pollitzer, was a professor of anatomy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and past president of the American Association of Physical Anthropologists (1979-81) and the Human Biology Council (1986-88). His physical anthropological research focused on genetic and morphological studies of population isolates, including the Brass Ankles, Cajuns, Catawba, Cherokee, Gullah, Haliwa, Kalmuk Mongols, Lumbee, Melungeons and Seminole. His dedication to Physical Anthropology helped move the discipline forward. Early on in his career, Bill recognized that the success of any science depends on the professional organization that provides the superstructure and place of annual gathering where the newest and latest cutting-edge research is presented. This perspective explains why he was so giving of his time to the AAPA. Bill was also an eloquent spokesperson for evolution, and was committed to the notion that religion and science are compatible entities. In recognition of his many contributions to his discipline, the American Association of Physical Anthropologists awarded its most prestigious honor, the Charles R. Darwin Lifetime Achievement Award.
